Hot Ginger and Ginger Shots: Two Recipes for Cold Days

Cup of Hot Ginger with an orange slice, made with Griza ginger base

When it gets cold, ginger steps up. Two recipes we make all season long: a cup of Hot Ginger, ready in a minute, and a ginger shot that wakes you up in one gulp. Both start with Griza, our base with 50% ginger, no preservatives and no colourings.

Hot Ginger: ginger tea ready in a minute

Classic ginger tea means peeling the root, slicing it and boiling it. With Griza the ginger is already there: pour, stir, drink.

You'll need

  • 20–25 ml Griza, about a tablespoon and a half
  • 20 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 250 ml hot water
  • optional: a slice of lemon

How to make it

  1. Shake the Griza bottle well. Natural ginger settles at the bottom, that's normal.
  2. Add Griza and the lemon juice to a cup and pour the hot water over them.
  3. Stir, add the lemon slice and you're done.

The starting ratio is 1:10. Too fiery? Add more water. Too mild? Add more Griza.

Winter variations

  • Hot Ginger with tea. Instead of plain water, use black, green or herbal tea, brewed the way you usually drink it.
  • Hot Ginger with cinnamon. Leave a cinnamon stick in the cup for a minute or two before drinking.
  • Hot Ginger with orange. A slice of orange and a clove, for a cup that smells like the holidays.
  • Hot Ginger for long evenings. Adults only: a splash of dark rum or whisky. In moderation.

Ginger shot: the quick version, no juicer needed

A classic ginger shot takes fresh ginger, a juicer and patience. With Griza you make it in 30 seconds, and it comes out at least as fierce.

The basic shot (40 ml)

  • 10 ml Griza
  • 10 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 20 ml cold water

Shake the Griza bottle well, put everything in a small glass, stir and knock it back. It's intense: a third of the glass is ginger base.

Variations

  • Orange shot. Swap the water for fresh orange juice, for a rounder taste.
  • Turmeric shot. Add a pinch of turmeric and a pinch of black pepper. Stir well, as turmeric settles quickly.
  • Apple shot. Apple juice instead of water, for anyone who wants something a bit gentler.
  • Warm shot. For really cold mornings: 10 ml Griza, 10 ml lemon juice and 20 ml hot water.

Prep a week's worth

In a clean bottle, mix 70 ml Griza, 70 ml lemon juice and 140 ml water: that's 7 shots. Keep the bottle in the fridge, shake it before each shot and finish it within a few days, because fresh lemon loses its aroma quickly.

When to drink a ginger shot?

Whenever you like. Many people have it in the morning, as a small wake-up ritual. Others drink it before a meal or after a workout. If you have a sensitive stomach, don't drink it on an empty stomach: ginger and lemon can cause heartburn.

How far a bottle of Griza goes

  • Griza 90 ml: about 4 cups of Hot Ginger or 9 shots
  • Griza 200 ml: about 9 cups of Hot Ginger or 20 shots
  • Griza 750 ml: about 34 cups of Hot Ginger or 75 shots

Where to get Griza

Griza comes in three sizes: 90 ml to try it, 200 ml to give as a gift and 750 ml for yourself. All three share the same recipe, with 50% ginger. It's not just another syrup: it's a ginger base made so you can taste the ginger.
